FAQ: Redsky 5e - A Science-Fantasy Total Conversion Book
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What exactly is Redsky?

Redsky is an approximately 300-page Tabletop Role-playing game book that serves two functions. First: It uses, adapts, and extends the SRD5 rules (also known as 5th edition of the most popular TTRPG) for use in games without magic. Second: it is a setting book for Solar Studios’ flagship science-fantasy universe, Redsky. Redsky has been under development for years and has boundless potential as a game world because of its deep lore and detailed conflicts.

What do you mean by "science-fantasy"?

Imagine a classical-era world full of political intrigue and war (think the Roman or Persian Empires). Add giant monsters, nonhuman sentient species, buried hyper-advanced technology left by a forgotten civilization, and you will end up in the Redsky universe.

Oh, and it’s not on a planet. The main landmass, Dema, is suspended inside a colossal spaceship and lit by a fake sun. The ship’s crew is watching them and taking notes. The inhabitants of Dema do not know about this part, so keep it quiet.

What if I like the setting, but I don't like 5e? Or I want to use the rules to run games in my own magic-less setting?

The two halves of this book are intermingled, although either half can be used without the other. We are working hard to make the rules nearly universally applicable to non-magical settings. You may want to come up with your own sentient species, but the classes and other mechanics should translate very well.

The lore section of the book will also be as comprehensive as we can make it, so even if you ignore the rules section entirely you will still have content to enjoy.

So there are no spells or spellcasters?

That’s right! With Redsky, we are going for a more dangerous style of game. Your characters will not be as powerful, and the world will be more threatening. Not everybody prefers that type of game, and that’s fine! But we believe there is some hunger out there for (5e) games that are a little more grounded, where the characters aren’t practically demigods who can blow up buildings with little effort.

What if I still want a magic sword? What is this 'Eldertech'?

In-universe, Eldertech is advanced technology that was left behind by a high-tech civilization that has since vanished. Functionally, Eldertech is a replacement for magic items! Everybody still wants cool treasure, no matter the type of game. With Eldertech, you can still have that cool “magic” sword without introducing true magic into the world.

Do you have new races?

We call them “sentient species” or “sentients”, yes. There are five, so if you add in humans, that makes six playable sentients total.

What about new classes?

Six of those, too, although two are adapted from existing 5e classes. Features from other 5e classes sometimes show up in the remaining four as well. There are also six Elements (we really like the number six).

Last updated: June 17, 2021 06:28

What's all this stuff about Elements? Will I be able to shoot fire from my hands?

In short, no. The Elements are a new system designed to replace the classic Alignment grid used in character creation. To summarize, the Element system does away with Good vs Evil and Law vs Chaos. Instead, it helps you define your character’s personality along three spectrums, and has nothing to do with whether a character is “good” or “evil”. I like monsters, will you have some of those?

Absolutely! We will have many pages of monsters.

Last updated: June 17, 2021 06:30

So are you releasing an adventure module as well?

The core book does not have an adventure contained within. However, we will be releasing nine short adventures based in the universe, with more to come. Six will be available online to backers for free.

As of passing 1000 backers, we also committed to our next Kickstarter: a full-length hardcover adventure book!

What’s the difference between the Core Book and the “Core Rules PDF”?

The Core Rules PDF will have all of the rules available in the main book, along with the monsters and Eldertech. The setting’s lore and art will be left out.

What is the Jade Feather?

The Jade Feather is a tavern in one of the biggest cities in Dema. It’s also the name of our upcoming community space where we will share previews and other behind-the-scenes information about the game.

Last updated: June 17, 2021 06:32

When are you planning to ship?

June 2022. The PDF version of the book will be available earlier, in March or April. The Core Rules PDF will be public even earlier than that, around January.

What about Virtual Tabletop platforms?

We have surpassed the stretch goal that guarantees VTT support! Our current target platforms are Roll20 (unconfirmed), Shard Tabletop, Astral Tabletop, Foundry Virtual Tabletop, Fantasy Grounds, the Discord bot Avrae, and Dicecloud. We may pick up others as well, depending on demand.

By “support” we mean “make our rules and adventures available to the fullest extent allowed by the platform”. That means character sheets, tokens, maps, NPCs, and all of that good stuff. If it’s possible, we’ll do it.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
